Ensphere Solutions Introduces Laser Diode Shunt Driver ICs and 10-Gbps Optical Transceiver

Ensphere Solutions has introduced an ESI-1010 laser diode shunt driver ICs and an ESI-1002 transceiver for 10-Gbps optical transceiver modules. The products are specifically designed for SFP+, 10 GB Ethernet and various fiber channel uses.

The ESI-1002 incorporates a vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) driver and a limiting amplifier that can deliver a modulation current of up to 28 mA. It meets the SFF-8472 electrical standards and is compatible with a SPI processor interface for monitoring and diagnostics of a number of operations such as laser bias, modulation currents, voltage, transmit power levels and temperature. A complete system will have les than 800 mW of power dissipation, comprising the laser current.

The ESI-1002 in combination with an ESI-1010 external driver can be utilized with distributed feedback lasers and Fabry-Perot for longer-reach applications. The ESI-1010 is a single channel 10-Gbps laser diode driver that is intended to carry a wide range of laser RC time constants. It can deliver up to 50 mA of modulation and 100 mA of bias currents.

The ESI-1010 can be utilized in a shunt set up similar like Ensphere’s earlier laser diode driver arrays. In this method, the ESI-1010 laser diode drives a low impedance laser diode and supplies a 50-ohm load to the previous driver. It comes in die shape and can be deployed adjoining to the laser. This limitation reduces the bond wires’ length.

According to Ensphere, the pre-driver can be positioned farther apart without any signal integrity degradation threat. The ESI-1010 offers 50 mW of power dissipation when used in CMOS. Its shunt set up considerably decreases the system’s overall power dissipation.
