Nikon to Debut LU-NA and LU-NB Solid State Laser Systems at Society for Neuroscience Meeting

Nikon Instruments, Inc. today announced a breakthrough in microscope laser technology, with the introduction of its LU-NA and LU-NB laser units. Both of the products are solid state laser systems, requiring no calibration or alignment, and are flexible enough to bridge multiple imaging applications. The systems will debut at the 43rd Society for Neuroscience Meeting, taking place November 9-13 in San Diego.

X-ray Light Created With Qualities of Laser Light

SwissFEL will create X-ray light with laser-like characteristics. The strong amplification of the light needed is produced by a process known as “micro-bunching” – electron packets break up in the undulator into thin layers which emit light in phase. At the same time, another process called “seeding” is being studied, in which one will be able to establish the properties of the light even more precisely.

NXP Expands LCD Drivers’ Portfolio to Address Vertical Alignment Display Technology Requirements

Vertical Alignment (VA) is a display technology in which the liquid crystals naturally align vertically to the glass substrates (homeotropic alignment). When no voltage is applied, the polarized light passes through the cell without a change in polarization and the light is completely blocked by the second polarizer set at 90o to the first, creating a perfectly black state. When voltage is applied, the LC molecules rotate to a horizontal position allowing light to pass through and create a white display image.

Novel OLED for Displays Demonstrates Potential for High Conversion Efficiencies

OLEDs are already used in the displays of smart phones or digital cameras today. They offer an especially bright image with high contrast, but come with a serious drawback: typically, only one quarter of the electrical energy invested in running the device is actually converted into light. This ratio can be raised by adding traces of noble metals such as platinum or iridium to the active material, but these elements are rare and very expensive. Making high-quality OLEDs is therefore a rather costly business.
