Record High 255 Terabits/s Transmission Achieved Over New Type of Fibre

Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands and the University of Central Florida (CREOL) in the USA, report in the journal Nature Photonics the successful transmission of a record high 255 Terabits/s over a new type of fibre allowing 21 times more bandwidth than currently available in communication networks. This new type of fibre could be an answer to mitigating the impending optical transmission capacity crunch caused by the increasing bandwidth demand.

New Type of Light Diffusion Discovered in Tiny Optical Fibers

Researchers at the Femto-ST Institute (CNRS/UFC/UTBM/ENSMM)1, working in collaboration with colleagues from the Charles Fabry Laboratory (CNRS/Institut d'Optique Graduate School), have just discovered a new type of light diffusion in tiny optical fibers 50 times thinner than a strand of hair! This phenomenon, which varies according to the fiber's environment, could be used to develop sensors that are innovative and highly sensitive. The work is published in the journal Nature Communications on October 24, 2014.

The Compact Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) observed comet C/2013 A1 Siding Spring as the comet sped close to Mars on Oct. 19. CRISM recorded imaging data in 107 different wavelengths, showing the inner part of the cloud of dust, called the coma, surrounding the comet's nucleus.

NeoPhotonics to Purchase EMCORE's Tunable Laser and Transceiver Product Lines for $17.5 Million

EMCORE Corporation a leading provider of compound semiconductor-based components, subsystems, and systems for the fiber optics and space solar power industries, announced today that it has entered into a definitive purchase agreement with NeoPhotonics under which NeoPhotonics has agreed to purchase EMCORE's tunable laser and transceiver product lines for $17.5 million, consisting of $1.5 million in cash at closing and a $16 million promissory note from NeoPhotonics.
