UCHealth Eye Center Performs Bionic Eye Surgery to Restore Limited Sight to Blind Patient

The UCHealth Eye Center at University of Colorado Hospital has performed the first "bionic eye" procedure in the Rocky Mountain region, restoring limited sight to a woman who has been blind for almost two decades. Only two centers in the Western United States have implanted the device, which uses a small camera and microchip to stimulate the patient's optic nerve.

Ultratech Receives Multiple-System, Follow-On Order for LSA101 Laser Spike Anneal Systems

Ultratech, Inc., a leading supplier of lithography, laser-processing and inspection systems used to manufacture semiconductor devices and high-brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs), as well as atomic layer deposition (ALD) systems, today announced that it has received a multiple-system, follow-on order for its LSA101 laser spike anneal systems. Ultratech's customer plans to use the LSA101 systems for production at its facility in Asia.

AFIT Develops Novel Human Skin Detection Technology

Color-image based systems are excellent at locating people in aerial search and rescue operations, but fall short when it comes to discerning between actual human skin and objects with similar hues. To remedy this, researchers at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) have developed a novel two-dimensional feature space which uses the spectral absorption characteristics of melanin, hemoglobin and water to better characterize human skin.

NASA Engineers Test Pinpoint Accuracy of Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System

Close enough doesn’t cut it in the spacecraft assembly cleanroom at NASA Goddard’s Space Flight Center, where engineers are building an elevation-measuring instrument to fly on the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 or ICESat-2. Recently, engineers tested the instrument's pinpoint accuracy.

INRS Professor Elected OSA Fellow in Recognition of Contributions to Ultrafast Photonics

INRS professor José Azaña of the Énergie Matériaux Télécommunication Research Centre has been elected Fellow by the Optical Society (OSA) in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the advancement of ultrafast photonics, particularly in the areas of integrated waveguide technologies and compact fibre optics devices. He is the only Quebec academic and one of three Canadian researchers in this year's group of 77 OSA Fellows.
