Digital Lumens Intelligent LED Lighting Replaces Metal Halide Fixtures at Dartmouth College Leverone Field House

Digital Lumens today announced that Dartmouth College has upgraded the lighting in its newly renovated Leverone Field House to the Digital Lumens Intelligent LED Lighting System, achieving NCAA-required lighting levels and reducing lighting energy use dramatically.

Replacing the 1,000-Watt metal halide fixtures with intelligent LED high bay fixtures is projected to reduce lighting energy by 75% as the team continues to optimize settings in the 91,000 square foot facility. With an indoor track, multi-use practice area for various team sports, and a weight room, the Field House is continuously in use, with varying lighting needs depending on the time of day, week or practice and event schedules.

The Dartmouth team selected the Digital Lumens system for efficiency, control, fixture durability, and LightRules lighting and energy management software. In addition to LightRules’ web-based interface, the installation also included an on-site touchscreen kiosk for coaches, event managers and others. Using the LightRules application programming interface (API), the touchscreen has a range of profiles that map to the many uses for the site so that anyone with login can easily and securely invoke the lighting profiles for their specific uses, e.g., track practice, baseball practice, or special events.

“Due to Leverone’s 60-foot arching roof and more than two acres of interior space, lighting the field house has always been a challenge, requiring over-lighting with high-wattage fixtures and constant re-lamping due to lamp source degradation,” said Steve Shadford, P.E., LEED AP, Energy Program Manager, at Dartmouth College. “With the Digital Lumens system, we have both the control and flexibility to meet the needs of the groups and teams that use the site, while making significant progress toward our energy management goals.”

“We are honored that Dartmouth has chosen Digital Lumens for this high-profile facility,” said Tom Pincince, President and CEO of Digital Lumens. “With this deployment, the college joins the growing ranks of leading sporting facilities transitioning to intelligent LED solutions that optimize lighting delivery and savings, with the flexibility to support changing lighting needs.”

Part of Dartmouth College’s campus-wide commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability, the intelligent lighting system is projected to reduce electrical consumption in the Field House by approximately 9.6 MWH and carbon footprint by 13.2 million pounds over the twenty-year lifetime of the installation. More information on the Dartmouth College Energy Program can be found on their energy program website. In addition, the project was recently recognized by Environmental Leader as a 2014 Project of the Year.

“In designing a solution for a complex space like Dartmouth’s Leverone Field House, we had to specify a system that could meet the diverse needs of the facility’s users and events while still maximizing energy efficiency,” said Jay Boucher, Principal for The Leading Edge Design Group. “With the LightRules lighting management software, the wireless networking, and integrated occupancy and daylight harvesting sensors in each fixture, the Intelligent Lighting System proved the best solution for the Field House project.”
