Innovative LaserStream Solution Enables More Precision Tracking

Avago Technologies, a leading supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications, today announced two new high-precision small form factor laser navigation sensors for corded and cordless PC mice. Based on Avago’s LaserStream™ technology, these new navigation sensors come complete with several lens options. Avago’s ADNS-7530/7550 navigation sensors will also enable mouse designers to develop mice that are easy to use and provide precise tracking on a broad range of surfaces.

With the new ADNS-7530/7550 sensors, Avago has taken yet another step to reduce the size limitation barrier that mouse designers have been faced with over the years. These laser navigation sensors provide high speed motion detection – up to 30 inches per second (ips) and 8 g, an on-chip oscillator and integrated Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) to minimize the number of components required for the design. Moreover, these laser sensors use coherent light and interference to reveal fine surface’s features to enable computer mice to track accurately on a broad range of surfaces. Avago’s ADNS-7550 series is suitable for corded applications such as corded mice for PCs, trackballs and input devices. The ADNS-7530 series has a lower power architecture with automatic power management modes, making it ideal for use in cordless applications such as miniature travel mice and cordless input devices.

Avago pioneered optical sensing for mouse technology and continues to be a trend setter in providing entry-level to next-generation LED and laser mouse sensors to all mouse manufacturers worldwide. To date, Avago has shipped over 800 million mouse sensors to mouse manufacturers throughout the world.

Avago’s ADNS-7530/7550 series are based on optical navigation technology which measures changes in position by optically acquiring sequential surface images (frames) and mathematically determining the direction and magnitude of movement. The ADNS-7530/7550 contains an Image Acquisition System (IAS), a Digital Signal Processor (DSP), and four wire Serial Port Interface (SPI) support. The IAS acquires microscopic surface images via the lens and illumination systems. These images are then processed by the DSP and determine the direction and distance of motion. The design architecture uses Avago’s patented LaserStream optical mouse technology, which provides accurate and precise tracking on a broad range of surfaces -- especially on smooth surfaces like photo paper, black painted surface and tiles.

Three different lens options are available for the ADNS-7530/7550 to enable designers to design in the new package without having to change the existing mouse base plate. The lens options include a small form factor lens (ADNS-6150), trim lens (ADNS-6160-001) and a wide trim lens (ADNS-6170-002). These lens options provide full design flexibility for mouse makers to meet their design requirements in ESD immunity, backward compatibility and small mouse design.

The rib design on ADNS-7530/7550 laser sensor package coupled with the lens locking feature provides ease of assembly when assembling to the mouse printed circuit board (PCB). With dimensions of 16.2 mm long (L) by 10.1 mm wide (W) by 3.96 mm high (H), Avago’s ADNS-7530/7550 laser module is ideal for use in miniature laser mouse designs. These new sensors, which target Avago’s OEM and retail market customers, integrate the laser sensor and VCSEL into a single package within a small footprint for small mouse designs and ease of assembly.
