Fairchild Semiconductor Unveils Bi-Directional Optocoupler for Test and Measurement Applications

Fairchild Semiconductor has introduced a new complete duplex, logic gate, bi- directional optocoupler called the FOD8012. The optocoupler has high noise resistance and provides optimal optical isolation.

The FOD8012 carries out isolated transmissions of digital signals between systems by resisting unsafe voltages or ground loops. The optocoupler provides a minimum optical isolation gap of 0.4 mm for consistent isolation, while existing equipment offers an optical isolation gap of 0.1 mm.

The optocoupler has a quick switching speed of up to 15 Mb/s and features Fairchild's patented Optoplanar packaging technology. It has an enhanced IC design to attain 20 kV/ µs minimum common mode rejection (CMR). These features enable the device to function in high noisy industrial surroundings.

The FOD8012 can be operated under wide industrial temperature range of -40 °C to +110 °C. It offers a supply voltage of 5 or 3.3 V to enable logic level translation. The optocoupler has received IEC60747-5-2 and UL1577 certifications ultra isolation voltage for improved reliability.

The FOD8012 is ideal for applications such as programmable logic control and servo control and industrial fieldbus communications. It is also used for plant automation, inverter, test and measurement and process control applications.
