Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Captures First On-Sky Image with Sinistro Camera

Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT), with first lights at nine new 1-meter telescopes since April of 2012, achieved another critical milestone by capturing the first on-sky image with a production Sinistro camera. In development for over six years, the camera is arguably more important than the telescopes that will use them. “A telescope is really nothing more than a large camera lens,” explained Joe Tufts, instrumentation scientist on the Sinistro project. “A large, precise, stable, and very expensive camera lens.”

Eaton Receives U.S. DoE Research Grant to Develop Energy Efficient Lighting Products

Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton today announced that it has received a $2.4 million research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to explore the development of energy efficient lighting products. Eaton’s research, slated for completion in 2015, will aim to improve the manufacturing speed of light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures by three times over the typical rate, reduce LED light engine costs by five times and reduce assembly costs by approximately 50 percent.

DTE Energy Seeks Entries for Second E-Challenge for Energy Efficiency in Advanced Lighting Program

DTE Energy is seeking entries for its second E-Challenge for Energy Efficiency program. This year's competition, co-sponsored by Detroit-based NextEnergy in partnership with The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD), will focus on innovative energy efficiency technology in advanced lighting. Electron Leakage Identified as Culprit Behind LED Efficiency Droop

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute researchers have identified the mechanism behind a plague of LED light bulbs: a flaw called “efficiency droop” that causes LEDs to lose up to 20 percent of their efficiency as they are subjected to greater electrical currents. Efficiency droop, first reported in 1999, has been a key obstacle in the development of LED lighting for situations, like household lighting, that call for economical sources of versatile and bright light.
