Researchers Developed Cloaking Device to Hide Objects

Researchers at the University of Maryland have developed a cloaking device which can now hide objects in a much wider portion of the visible spectrum of light. An observer could even see what's behind the object, just as if the obstruction wasn't there. While not quite up to Romulan standards, the application does work in two dimensions and on very small objects.

This LED driver delivers an input voltage range up to 30V in an industry-first, small 6-pin TSOT (2.9x2.8mm) package. Crystal IS Won Grant to Develop High Performance Deep UV LED

Crystal IS, Inc. of Green Island, NY has announced that it has won a $2M award from NIST's Advanced Technology Program (ATP) for the development of high performance deep ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on its low defect aluminum nitride (AlN) substrates. This award follows the recent successful completion of a previous ATP award to Crystal IS in 2004 for the development of 2-inch high quality AlN substrates.

Highly Efficient QCL Could Provide Compact and Portable Source of Mid-Infrared Radiation

A highly efficient quantum cascade laser (QCL) that operates continuous wave (CW) at room temperature could provide a compact, portable and cost-efficient source of mid-infrared radiation, say researchers in the US. Their QCL emits at 4.5 microns, has a wall plug efficiency of over 9.3% and a CW output power of 675mW. Wall plug efficiencies greater than 18% are also reported for devices at a temperature of 150K, with CW output powers of more than 1W.
