LG LED LCD TVs to Feature THX Bright Room Viewing Mode That Provides Abundant Ambient Light

THX Ltd. introduces an exclusive THX Viewing Mode called Bright Room that recreates the cinema experience in home theaters with abundant ambient light. The LG INFINIA LE9500 and LE8500 LED LCD series and LG INFINIA PK950 and PK750 Plasma series are the first THX Certified TVs to feature THX Bright Room, introduced this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show (LG Booth #8205).

The goal of THX Bright Room Mode is to closely reproduce the HD Color Standard and other video parameters used by filmmakers in dark mastering studios, with careful adjustments made for brighter environments. THX Bright Room Mode sets luminance, black levels, gamma and backlighting for typical bright room conditions. These optimized settings deliver accurate color and contrast, while allowing THX professional calibrators access for further fine tuning.

"Because all rooms are unique in regards to lighting, the amount and type of light in the home theater can have a dramatic impact on how you perceive color and detail," said John Dahl, director of education at THX. "THX Bright Room will provide home theater enthusiasts a playback setting that allows them to experience the rich details and vividness of their favorite movies when the lights are turned on and the window shades open."

All THX Certified Displays undergo a rigid laboratory testing process which includes strict performance standards for items such as, black levels, resolution, contrast and color gamut. THX engineers have also created a battery of signal processing tests to improve a TV's scaling, motion conversion and de-interlacing capabilities. In addition to THX Bright Room Mode, all THX Certified LG TVs will incorporate THX Movie Mode, a picture setting that lets consumers experience vivid colors, deep blacks and clean processing in darker viewing environments.

THX certification proved valuable to display manufacturers in 2009, helping them improve performance, differentiate from competitors and drive sales. The number of TVs and projectors featuring THX Display Certification will increase more than 70 percent in 2010 from 2008, with global distribution from LG and other leading TV brands.
