Spectra-Physics Announce New Ultrafast Laser System for Multiphoton Imaging

Spectra-Physics®, a Newport company, introduces InSight® DS+™, a widely-tunable ultrafast laser system with enhanced power levels over its industry-leading predecessor, the InSight DeepSee™.

This extraordinary, new laser system features ultrashort pulses over a very broad tuning range of 680 to 1300 nm for deepest imaging, delivering continuous, fully-automated tuning from a single beam.  A second beam provides simultaneous dual-wavelength output at 1041 nm for multimodal imaging. The new InSight DS+ is ideal for in vivo deep tissue imaging for neuroscience, cell biology, and other life science research.

“The highly successful InSight DeepSee redefined multiphoton imaging by enabling users to seamlessly image at dramatically greater depths, and the new InSight DS+ takes that performance to the next level,” says Julien Klein, senior manager, product marketing for Spectra-Physics. “As the number one supplier of ultrafast lasers, Spectra-Physics continues to further expand its portfolio of industry-leading lasers for bio-imaging.”

The new InSight DS+ offers enhanced power levels of >1.2 W at 900 nm, >1.0 W at 1000 nm and >0.7 W at 1200 nm, and continuous, 680-1300 nm gap-free tuning.  The short <120 fs pulse widths, highest peak power levels at infrared wavelengths, and integrated dispersion pre-compensation result in imaging penetration depths beyond 1 mm, as successfully demonstrated in live tissue. A second synchronized beam at 1041 nm is available for advanced imaging techniques, including uncaging, dual-wavelength simultaneous imaging, second-harmonic generation (SHG), third-harmonic generation (THG), coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) imaging.

This fully-automated ultrafast laser can be seamlessly tuned by software to any wavelength within seconds. The laser system also has ideal beam characteristics optimized for multiphoton imaging.  InSight DS+ is designed, built, and tested to stringent quality standards for hands-free, reliable operation.
