Clutch assembly manufacturer, Setco Automotive has selected JK Lasers’ high-power industrial CW laser to develop automotive clutch plates. The new plates will be utilized in Premium Class vehicles in Russia and Europe and in heavy-duty trucks in India.
JK Lasers will deliver a 2 kW laser to manufacture a seam weld with a depth of 2.5 mm. The weld will be used to join the drive plate to the inner disc ring.
JK Lasers’ Applications team and Setco Engineers in the UK conducted trials to develop and optimize the laser welding parameters. In order to fulfill Setco’s production requirements, JK Lasers had to attain quick cycle times. After conducting the extensive trials, the 722 mm seam weld was produced in 20 sec.
JK Lasers’ timeshare facility was used to produce the seam weld. The facility allows the delivery of two workstations from one laser source, thereby doubling the manufacturing abilities of the Setco plant.
