New Smart Sensor from AuthenTec Integrates Multiple Touch-Controlled Functions

AuthenTec (NASDAQ: AUTH), the world’s leading provider of smart sensors and solutions, today announced production availability of its most advanced smart sensor for the mobile systems market, the AES1750. This high performance, low power smart sensor combines multiple touch-powered functions – including touchpad-like navigation with personalization and fingerprint security – in an elegant, one-half millimeter thin, yet highly durable package that is easy to integrate in mobile phones, remote controls, digital cameras, smartbooks, and other consumer electronic products.

The AES1750 is the first sensor to take full advantage of AuthenTec’s new TouchStone™ packaging technology, which provides a perfectly flat, uniformly colored surface for a smooth feel and enhanced aesthetics. It is the first sensor to fully integrate AuthenTec’s TrueNav™ technology on chip, enabling mobile handset designers to use the sensor as a replacement for navigation only components such as trackballs and optical touch pads. TrueNav, which provides enhanced touch control functions such as precise cursor positioning, turbo scrolling, and full touchpad emulation, is what allows AuthenTec to turn the AES1750 from simply a fingerprint sensor into a multi-functional smart sensor. The AES1750 allows smartphone and mobile device makers to replace a wide array of mechanical input control devices including track balls, touch pads, scroll wheels, and optical mice, with a significantly thinner component while also offering enhanced security and personalization features for end users.

“The AES1750 is a result of significant investments in our product and packaging roadmap aimed specifically at the mobile market,” said AuthenTec CEO Scott Moody. “We listened closely to our customers to fully understand the value of cosmetic appearance and small size in a multi-function device that is the central touch point of the mobile phone. Our new AES1750 smart sensor in TouchStone packaging, delivers the combination of features and aesthetic appeal needed for high-visibility integration in today’s feature and smart phones.”

The AES1750 is optimized for low power operation, and is a highly integrated component, offering a low total BOM solution to cost-conscious device manufacturers. The AES1750 is now available in production quantities and has already been designed into multiple smartphone models that are scheduled to begin shipping this year.

AES1750 Features:

  • Small form factor, 0.5mm thin 17-pin TouchStone Package
  • Ultra-hard surface coating with multiple color options
  • 128 x 8 pixel sensor array provides 500 DPI resolution
  • Wide operating temperature range: -40°C to +85°C
  • Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI™ & McBSP™ compatible)
  • On-chip direct ÄX, ÄY navigation output
  • Low current consumption @ 1.8V
  • Android, Windows Mobile, Linux, Symbian and other OS Support

AuthenTec’s AES1750 smart sensor is based on TruePrint® technology, AuthenTec's patented and unique solution that reads below the surface of the skin to the live layer where a person's true fingerprint resides. This patented subsurface approach enables AuthenTec sensors to read virtually every fingerprint, every time -- a critical requirement in any fingerprint-enabled device.
