Picosun Group, the dealer of the principal AGILE ALD™ (Atomic Layer Deposition) thin-film coating solutions, demonstrated excellent outcomes in improving micro-LED performance using ALD passivation.
Micro-LEDs are a powerful competitor to current display technologies such as OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes), LCDs (liquid crystal displays), or traditional LEDs (light-emitting diodes). Micro-LEDs provide low power consumption, compact size, energy efficiency, superior brightness, color saturation, greater contrast, ultra-high resolution, flexibility, and good reliability, and they are now actively investigated and produced at the top electronics manufacturers and R&D institutes across the world. Micro-LEDs are usually used for tiny screens such as those used in smartwatches, smartphones, and tablets and the first large-area displays have also been established already.
Nevertheless, the micro-LED technology has some disadvantages that hamper its full-scale commercial advance. The micro-LED screen comprises of minuscule pixels generating red, green, and blue light. Certain steps in the manufacturing process of these pixels straightforwardly cause damage to their subtle nanometer-scale structures, which results in loss of light intensity.
ALD has now been established to efficiently overcome these drawbacks, not only restoring the light intensity but also actually uplifting it to higher levels. At Picosun customer site, National Chiao Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan, the light-emitting intensity of micro-LEDs has been improved by 143.7% with the help of ALD passivation layers deposited with PICOSUN™ ALD equipment.
