JDSU Announces Availability of its Pocket-Sized Family of Fiber Optic Testers

JDSU today announced that its pocket-sized family of fiber optic testers is now available through an authorized network of distributors. The family of products includes power meters and laser sources designed for specific applications in telecommunications, cable and enterprise environments. The products will be on display at OFC/NFOEC 2008 in San Diego, California, February 26-28 (booth #2021, Hall C; FTTx Center, booth #3139, Hall E; and booth #703, Hall B).

Addressing basic functionalities needed for fiber optic power measurement and loss testing, JDSU's pocket-sized light sources and optical power meters provide accurate measurements in a simple, entry-level unit at an attractive price. Just 3.9 inches (10 cm) long, the testers are also fully interoperable with JDSU's fiber inspection and cleaning solutions by providing results from the device under test (DUT) once the fiber is inspected and cleaned.

"Leveraging more than 20 years of experience in the handheld test market, our line of pocket-sized testers are low-cost, rugged, compact and easy-to-use -- in other words, ideal for the rigors of continuous use by contractors and network installers," said Assaji Aluwihare, general manager of the Network and Enterprise Test unit in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "Used with our fiber inspection, cleaning and test solutions, the handheld testers also help test technicians get the job done right -- the first time -- adding that much more value to the industry's broadest portfolio of fiber optic test instruments, systems and services."

JDSU's pocket-sized testers, the lightest and smallest power meters and light sources on the market, include the OLP-5, OLP-6, and OLP-8 pocket-sized optical power meters for universal, single-mode and multimode power measurement and loss testing capabilities and the OLS-5 and OLS-6 pocket-sized optical light sources offering high stability and long battery operating times. The testers have a unique "twin-test" function that allows simultaneous single mode and multimode tests, cutting test times in half in LAN and WAN environments and ideal for use in all fiber optic LAN, WAN, telecommunications or cable environments.

The design of JDSU's optical handheld testers protects the instruments from damage in the field and is designed to withstand even the harshest conditions. A one-year warranty protects the instruments from manufacturing defects. All JDSU optical handheld testers are calibrated to traceable national standards, and although a three-year calibration interval is recommended under normal operation conditions, no recalibration is necessary.

There are more than 70,000 previous-generation units of JDSU's optical handhelds platform currently in the field, making them one of the most widely and successfully deployed handheld test instruments in the industry.
