Software Module for Display Quality Evaluation

Displays that are viewed close to the eye lead to immersive virtual experiences, for example, those incorporated into VR/AR devices. Nevertheless, as images are enlarged to fill a user’s field of view (FOV), display defects also get amplified. Problems with uniformity of color and brightness, image position cloudiness, line defects, and dead pixels become more apparent to the user whose eyes are just centimeters away from display screens.

The TT-ARVR™ module is part of the TrueTest™ Software series from Radiant Vision Systems. It offers all the advantages of the TrueTest™ Software to efficiently carry out color, light, and dimensional measurements, with particular tests to assess the quality of displays incorporated into VR, AR, and MR (mixed reality) headsets and devices.

Radiant Vision Systems offers a complete AR/VR display test solution that integrates a ProMetric® imaging photometer or colorimeter, the TT-ARVR™ application-specific software module, and the Radiant XRE Lens or AR/VR Lens to carry out rapid, automated visual inspection of AR/VR displays.

The TT-ARVR™ module utilizes a ProMetric® imager to test all display properties concurrently, thereby capturing and processing data relatively faster and more reliably, when compared to a spot measurement device or a human inspector.

Comprehensive Display Test Suite

Tests intended for near-eye display (NED) quality comprise photometric measurements to assess light and color characteristics of an imaged display for flaws and precision against defined tolerances.

The TT-ARVR™ module enables users to define an entire set of pass/fail criteria and measurement parameters for certain points of interest on a display. Both standard display tests and specific tests for AR/VR quality are included in the software module. These are listed below:

  • ANSI Brightness
  • ANSI Color Uniformity
  • AutoPOI
  • Checkerboard Contrast
  • Chromaticity
  • Compare POI
  • Distortion 9 point
  • Distortion Dot Grid
  • Distortion Line Grid Analysis
  • Field View (reports real FOV of the display in diagonal, vertical, and horizontal directions)
  • Focus Uniformity
  • Image Export
  • MTF Line Pair
  • MTF LSF (Line Spread Function)
  • MTF Slant Edge (based on ISO 12233)
  • Through Focus MTF*
  • Particle Defects
  • Pattern Mura
  • Pixel Defects
  • Points of Interest
  • Sequential Contrast
  • Uniformity
  • Warping Analysis

* For use with the XRE Lens only

The TT-ARVR™ module is designed to capture dimensional measurements for projected image size as well as x,y position, reported in degrees (°). The software reports the real FOV of the display (diagonal, vertical, and horizontal) and the position of the image within the context of angular FOV.

Based on the TrueTest™ platform, all kinds of tests from the TT-ARVR™ test library can be introduced into a sequence (which are stored to enable numerous sequences to be produced and recalled, on demand). Pass/fail settings and test parameters are inputs for every test. The whole sequence can be run end-to-end automatically. Separate test results are shown and these can be recorded in a report.

Multiple System Configurations

TT-ARVR can be used with a ProMetric Imaging Colorimeter or Photometer, offering numerous options to realize the dynamic range, pixel resolution, field of view, and cost needs for users’ application.

The TT-ARVR™ module, supported by Radiant Vision Systems’ global support staff and distributor network, is not only field-proven but has also been used for testing displays in new high-end devices across the world.

Key Features and Highlights of the TT-ARVR™ Module

  • Software test sequencing as well as API device incorporation to regulate display test images in combination with software analyses; this allows automated production-level testing
  • Precise analysis of spatial data from images recorded by wide-field-of-view optics
  • Predefined tests can be quickly applied for VR/AR display measurement
  • Data analysis functions, such as cross-sections, isoplots, and bitmaps
  • Spatial x,y positions are reported in degrees (°); users should note the image position within the context of horizontal and vertical FOV

Typical Applications

The TT-ARVR™ module makes it possible to assess displays as they are viewed by a user via the AR/VR headsets, with complete chromaticity and luminance measurements for quality control based on the perception of humans.

  • NEDs can be assessed in AR/VR device assemblies
  • Use with a Radiant ProMetric® Imaging Photometer or Colorimeter and AR/VR Lens
  • Absolute chromaticity and luminance of projected images can be measured
  • Image clarity can be tested; MTF and distortion can be characterized over the FOV
  • Points of interest can be measured at x,y positions in angular space
