Photonics is Driving Quantum Developments and Research

The organisers of Photonex 2019 have arranged a significant focus on Quantum Technologies at the Coventry event on the 9th & 10th October 2019.

This specialist zone at the Photonex exhibition is where visitors can meet research groups who will be demonstrating and discussing their latest work. While University research groups will be present, so will some of the spin out companies that are moving new applied product developments forward. They will be keen to use their expertise to discuss new projects and contracts with Industry and Government sector visitors. The outstanding work to date by participants in this zone will be on display and there is a significant opportunity to explore collaboration opportunities as well as networking with the main photonics exhibitors.

Quantum technologies is all about now and the Future Potential for New Applications. The Photonex website includes a description of some of the key potential applications, these applications only represent some of the extensive potential for end users.

There are two significant meetings supporting the Quantum Technologies initiative. These are The Quantum Photonics Revolution (on Wednesday) and Cold Atoms for Quantum Technologies (Thursday), so depending on your specific interests pick which day to visit carefully! Keynote Speaker in Thursday’s meeting is Dr Christian Schubert of Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany who will give a presentation on “Bose-Einstein condensates for interferometry in space.” In his talk, he will introduce atom interferometry which enables absolute measurements of rotations, accelerations and related quantities. The QUANTUS/MAIUS collaboration studies atom optics and atom interferometry in microgravity for a future space-borne operation including a test of the universality of free fall and earth observation. Exploiting the extended free fall times of the atoms in these conditions for enhancing the scale factor requires atomic ensembles with low residual expansion rates as provided by delta-kick collimated Bose-Einstein condensates. Based on heritage from drop tower experiments, the sounding rocket mission MAIUS-1 enabled the successful creation of the first Bose-Einstein condensate in space.

Partnering with the event is SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, who has agreed to purchase Xmark Media, including Photonex Europe, Photonex Scotland, Photonex London, and Vacuum Expo.
