Brookhaven Lab Receives $28 Million to Support X-ray Crystallography Research at National Synchrotron Light Source

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory received grants from DOE and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) totaling $28 million to support an X-ray Crystallography Research Resource at the Laboratory's National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS). The grants of $15 million from DOE's Office of Biological and Environmental Research and $13 million from NIH's National Center for Research Resources will fund five years of operations and research.

Tiny Disk-Shaped Lasers Could One Day Beam Information Through Optical Computers

Tiny disk-shaped lasers as small as a speck of dust could one day beam information through optical computers. Unfortunately, a perfect disk will spray light out, not as a beam, but in all directions. New theoretical results, reported in the Optical Society (OSA) journal Optics Letters, explain how adding a small notch to the disk edge provides a single outlet for laser light to stream out.

Global PV Market has Grown by Around 5600 Megawatts

The Spanish PV market grew by more than 2661 Megawatts of new installed power in 2008. As a result, the global PV market has grown by around 5600 Megawatts. This enormous 100% increase compared with the 2007 figure explains part of the scarcity and high module prices in 2008. But, with a cap of 500 MW in 2009, it also means that the Spanish market will decrease in size by at least 80% (or more than 2100 MW) this year.
