Two Kansas State University psychology researchers have found that although central vision allows our eyes to discern the details of a scene, our peripheral vision is most important for telling us what type of scene we're looking at in the first place, such as whether it is a street, a mountain or a kitchen.

Digital Lightwave to Merge with Optel Acquisition; to Become Privately Held Corporation

Digital Lightwave, Inc. (OTCBB:DIGL), a leading provider of optical networking test equipment and technology, today announced a group of stockholders controlling 91.1% of its outstanding shares, yesterday filed a Schedule 13E-3 with the Securities and Exchange Commission disclosing that such stockholders will cause Digital Lightwave, Inc. (“Digital Lightwave”) to merge with a newly formed corporation, Optel Acquisition Corp. (“OAC”), in a “going private” transaction. The ultimate result of this transaction is that Digital Lightwave, Inc. will emerge as privately held corporation. Under Delaware law, the transaction does not require the approval of either Digital Lightwave’s board of directors or stockholders. The merger will not be consummated any sooner than the expiration of a 31-day period following the filing of the Schedule 13E-3.

U.S. Army Awards $19.3mn Contract to ITT Corp. for AN/PVS-14 Night Vision Monocular Devices

ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT) has been awarded a $19.3 million delivery order from the U.S. Army’s Research Development & Engineering Command Acquisition Center under the OMNI VII contract for AN/PVS-14 night vision monocular devices – ITT’s most popular and utilized night vision goggle. Eighty percent of these goggles are destined for the U.S. Air Force with the remaining quantities for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army.

World's First EK Surgery for Congenital Hereditary Endothelial Dystrophy Successful

Eight-year-old Hannah Terrell of Medford, Oregon, is living life with a new perspective. Last year, it was hard for Hannah to play tag with her friends because she couldn’t see the other children as they ran away. Now she is running across the field and chasing her friends like any other third-grader. Mark A. Terry, M.D., director of corneal services at Legacy Good Samaritan Devers Eye Institute in Portland, Ore., cleared Hannah’s vision in her right eye with the world’s first successful endothelial keratoplasty (EK) for congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy (CHED). Dr. Terry will operate on her left eye later this fall.

Ingram Micro Selects Dover's Barcode Printing Unit for Supply of Thermal Bar Code Printers

Datamax-O'Neil, the barcode and mobile printing business of Dover Corporation (NYSE: DOV) and a global provider of label and receipt printing solutions, has been named a preferred supplier of Thermal Bar Code Printers for Ingram Micro Inc. The printers will be used for the next three years at Ingram Micro's seven North American Distribution Centers for printing approximately one million labels a month for outgoing packages.
