Newport News Public School District in Virginia has installed Cree LED exterior luminaires at seven schools. The installation has helped reduce annual lighting energy costs by 65% and carbon emissions by 191,000 lb.
Cree THE EDGE security, area and parking structure luminaires were installed in the General Stanford Elementary, Lee Hall Elementary, Greenwood Elementary, Palmer Elementary, Booker T. Washington Middle, Crittenden Middle, and Denbigh High schools. The luminaires were used to replace 150 incandescent and 189 high-pressure sodium fixtures. The new luminaires deliver good illumination and high uniformity and color quality. The schools had specified requirements for sustainable illumination and the new installation helped them meet their goal and also reduce their maintenance and energy costs. The LED lighting has helped save energy in terms of 139,000 kWh, annually.
The Cree THE EDGE area, parking and security luminaires are suitable for illuminating exterior corridors, entryways and walkways. They are durable and energy-efficient. They help increase the safety and security for students, staff and parents during events and activities conducted in nighttime.
The Newport News Public School District’s Executive Director of plant services, Keith Webb stated that the energy-efficient light helped the district save in energy costs while drastically reducing maintenance. The LED lighting installation helps taxpayers and schools save money, while improving the Newport News Public School District’s goal of enhancing the learning environment for students.
The Newport News School District had spent $5.6 million towards energy costs in 2008. After implementing energy-saving projects, it has achieved significant savings in energy.
