Analysis of Quantum Photonics’ Application in ROADM-Based Networks

Capella, a supplier of wavelength selective switch (WSS) technologies has declared the completion of quantum photonic technique demonstration to analyze the Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) of complex optical devices.

WSS technologies are ideal for application in optical cross connects and reconfigurable optical add or drop multiplexer (ROADM). During the process of demonstration, the CRx WSS product platform of Capella was a perfect test device for PMD measurement. Directed by Professor Alexander Sergienko and sponsored by Capella, the demonstration is the combined outcome of the research achieved at the Quantum Communication and Measurement Laboratory (QCML) in Boston University. However, the demonstration was based on quantum interferometry with broadband polarization-entangled states. This research allows high-resolution result achieved by quantum photonic techniques, representing the advantages of partnership between university research teams and Capella.

With progress in high-speed fiber optic networks, there is an increased demand for high-resolution dispersion measurements. The overall PMD of components is analogous to the PMD integrated in the fiber, following the growing quantity of optical switches and optical components existing in the transmission path. The coherent receivers are PMD-tolerant. With increase in transmission bit rates, the performance penalty of PMD can still be noteworthy. The estimation of dispersion parameters from component devices is vital for overall system performance management.

According to Capella’s CEO, Larry Schwerin, the company’s involvement contributes to a successful optical analysis research for upcoming network integrity. The Company exhibits an extended record of successful advancements in optical networking using ROADM and WSS technology. The implementation of CR50 solution for this test event resulted in positive outcomes.
