As a major supplier of electro-optic components used in the detection of ions, electrons and photons, Photonis manufactures a wide portfolio of products for several markets. Photonis has been developing new technologies and applications for many years, however, “We only know what we know,” said Bruce Laprade, President & General Manager of Photonis Scientific, when brainstorming on generating new ideas. To help figure out what Photonis doesn’t know, Photonis organized a science challenge for students to come up with new ideas for applications aimed at a better tomorrow.

Photonis started this first edition of the Photonis Science Challenge in January 2019. 645 participants divided over 296 teams entered this challenge and came up with very innovative ideas. For the second round a selection of the best 10 teams was made to work together with a Photonis mentor to expand their idea. From the 10 semi-finalists, three teams were selected to present their ideas to the Photonis jury on the 10th of July during the final event which took place near Bordeaux, France.

“All of the students did an awesome job and we really appreciate the enthusiastic presentations. But as a jury we chose team Oligolight unanimously as the winner of our challenge,” said Laprade.

The team from Hong Kong came up with a solution to detect human diseases in a very early stage with the help of Photonis technologies. Their presentation was a perfect example of a new idea for applications aimed at a better tomorrow. Oligolight received €5.000,- as financial support for their studies. The second prize was for the French team the Hive, they received €2.500,- and Phototech from India won €1.000,- for their third prize.
