Samsung Launches Slim Portable Blu-Ray Optical Disk Drive

Samsung Electronics has unveiled an eco-friendly, portable and slim Blu-ray Writer for users of mobile PCs. The SE-506AB optical disk drive (ODD) has a slim form factor, a sleek design and a glossy anti-scratch surface.

The Samsung writer has been reduced in size by 12% when compared to the company’s conventional Blu-ray drive. The ODD allows PC multitasking. It prevents errors that may occur when the speed of writing exceeds the speed of data transfer, through its buffer underrun technology.

The optical Blu-ray drive is compatible with Win7, Mac OS and other major operating systems. It has an USB power interface that avoids the necessity of a dedicated electrical outlet.

The SE-506AB has better file and directory recognition when compared to earlier ODDs which were able to recognize only the first sub-directory and only 1000 files. The new model can recognize up to the fifth sub-directory and over 3000 files.

The ODD also features Samsung’s AV connectivity technology that allows users to play content on multimedia TVs that have an USB port. The drive supports recording speeds and media types including 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD-RW, 6X DVD-R Dual layer, 6X DVD+R Dual layer, 8X DVD+RW, 8X DVD±R, 6X BD-R Dual layer, 6X BD-R and 4X BD-R Quad layer. It supports reading speeds and media types including 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW and 6X BD-ROM.

The eco-friendly SE-506AB ODD utilizes lead-free soldering technology, limits usage of hazardous materials and consumes low power.
