Liquid Light Guide with High Power LED Source – Lambda HPX-L5

The Lambda HPX-L5 was developed as a liquid light guide coupled version of the HPX, the latest high power LED light source from Sutter Instruments.

The liquid light guide allows LED cooling through an internal heatsink with a whisper fan.

The LED light source requires less maintenance than the liquid cooled direct mount version. It is designed around a single 90 W 3 mm LED die, and provides light output comparable to a 150 W xenon arc lamp when using the same light guide.

The Lambda HPX-L5 is optimized for coupling to an off-the-shelf microscope adapter, and an optional 5 mm liquid light guide. It is expected that the HPX retains 95% of its original output at 5000 hours, and 80% after 10,000 hours.

The Lambda HPX was designed to dim the LED using either current control or PWM as LEDs exhibit color shift with current change. PWM is preferred for most applications, and enables the LED to run cooler.

PWM switching is at 28 KHz, high enough for use with most high speed cameras. Dimming via current control is also available for those with applications intolerant of any pulsed output.

Current information and PWM are conveniently displayed on the front panel display, and can be manually selected through control knobs. Integral shuttering time is 10 microseconds to turn on and off.

TTL output and input enables triggering either directly from another device such as a digital IO board or camera, or from software. It is also possible to externally control PWM via analog input. Active temperature monitoring insures maximizing the LED life.

Light output is in the visible spectrum from 430 nm to 700 nm. Special order units are available with 630 nm, 530 nm, 460 nm, and 405 nm wavelength specific LEDs. The Lambda HPX-L5 can also be combined with Sutter Instrument’s TLED to develop a two-channel system with any combination of wavelengths.
