Leadis Technology, Inc.
(NASDAQ: LDIS), a provider of best-in-class semiconductor solutions for
display, power management, touch and audio applications, today announced sample
availability of the LDS291 supporting VP Dynamics' advanced VPW™ RGBW
display technology.
This breakthrough is significant as the patented VPW™ RGBW pixel structure
provides: 1) significant advantages in backlight power saving, 2) higher brightness
for improved outdoor readability, and 3) superior image quality compared to
conventional RGB pixel structures. The innovative RGBW architecture allows the
LDS291 to provide two modes of operation -- a physical QVGA resolution mode
and a virtual VGA resolution mode using a pixel density equivalent to conventional
QVGA resolution. This unique combination overcomes limitations associated with
other RGBW pixel schemes, allowing for excellent Asian character text rendering
and enhanced image/video resolution.
The LDS291 delivers backlight power savings of over 40% in physical mode and
70% in virtual mode. It also offers Super Power Saving (SPS) mode and Dynamic
Backlight Control (DBC) mode to further maximize savings in power consumption.
The SPS mode and DBC functions each provide an additional 10~20% reduction in
backlight power consumption.
The 262K color LDS291 is targeted at small to mid-sized TFT displays supporting
QVGA to virtual VGA applications. The state-of-the-art features of the LDS291
make it an ideal solution for devices requiring vivid color display with very
low power consumption, such as mobile phone, portable navigation device, personal
media player, electronic dictionary and other handheld applications. In order
to broaden its appeal, the device is compliant with MPU, RGB, and MIPI DSI interfaces.
"With the LDS291 RGBW LCD driver we are demonstrating a leadership position
in extending the performance of TFT LCD displays for portable electronics products,"
said Keeho Kim, General Manager of the Display Driver Business Unit at Leadis.
"While we are currently working with two major display module manufacturers
on small screen applications, our intent is to extend the RGBW technology demonstrated
by the LDS291 to larger screen sizes."
