The Lambda DG-4/DG-5 PLUS, from Sutter Instruments, is a complete illumination system offering versatility and speed for experiments that need fast wavelength switching.
New digital servo technology enables faster filter switching and 30% greater light output than the first generation DG-4/DG-5.
The instrument eliminates the temporal constraints imposed by conventional filter changing devices like filter wheels even though it retains all of the advantages of interference filter based systems. Switching between any two wavelengths is achieved in 0.5 msec, allowing the user to carry out real-time video imaging.
The Lambda DG-4/DG-5 PLUS has a high switching speed, which allows it to follow rapid changes in ion concentrations in dual wavelength ratio imaging applications and to control other concomitant changes in the studied system at additional wavelengths.
Narrow bandpass systems, such as A.O. modulators, grating monochromators, and single cavity interference filters, pass unwanted harmonics of the desired wavelength. With variable wavelength devices, it is not always possible to obtain adequate blocking of out-of-band wavelengths.
Modern interference filters, like those used in the Lambda DG-4/DG-5 PLUS, do not pass harmonics and have integral blocking characteristics 1000 times better than typical monochromator systems. For the same full width at half maximum (FWHM), interference filters comprise of a narrower spectral bandpass than monochromators because of the absence of the slit function.
The Lambda DG-4/DG-5 PLUS has a dual galvanometer design, which enables tuning of the relative intensities at each wavelength. This modification is difficult to obtain in variable wavelength devices with a single optical path. The Lambda DG-4/DG-5 PLUS, unlike monochromators and other wavelength selective systems, is capable of being used as a source of white light when required.
