Hamamatsu Photonics UK has launched a new series of quantum cascade distributed feedback lasers. The L10195 distributed feedback lasers are available in pulsed and continuous-wave models with emission wavelengths ranging from 4565 nm to 9670 nm.
The pulsed output powers vary from 100 mW to 300 mW, while the CW output powers vary from 15 mW to 80 mW. The CW and pulsed operations takes place at 77 K and at room temperature, respectively.
The quantum cascade laser technology is a mid-infrared semiconductor laser, which can be used at room temperature by utilizing Peltier cooling. The L10195 lasers have wide tunability and narrow spectral linewidth, enabling them to be used in next generation infrared laser spectroscopy systems. The quantum cascade laser technology is used in security applications, process control, medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring.
The wide tunability of the quantum cascade laser emission wavelength allows measurement of various gases such as H2CO, N2O and CH4 at their absorption lines. The quantum cascade laser utilizes the inter sub-b and transitions and does not have a p-n junction.
The quantum cascade lasers have 20% duty ratio, 250 ns FWHM pulse duration, 80 mW pulsed output power and 3 A pulsed forward current. The operating temperature of the lasers ranges from -30 °C to 30 °C.
