Young Innovators Use Lumenera’s High-End Digital Scientific Imaging Solutions to Support Research on Biofuel Production

Lumenera is happy to help Canada's next generation of life science researchers by delivering high-end digital scientific imaging systems to 13-year-old multiple gold medal winner Mikaela Preston. The award winning research project of Mikaela focused on the improvement of biofuel production using a mixture of multiple algae strains. For this project, Lumenera provided an INFINITY2-2 microscopy camera.

Mikaela’s Research

Algae are gaining momentum as a subject of intense research for energy-efficient producers of food, medicinal products, and biofuels. Mikeala has been studying multi-species algal systems rather than isolating a strain and developing it. This project can result in a more robust strain of cells capable of recovering when faced with temporary light restrictions or plunges in temperature.

These types of challenges, including unusual weather patterns and cloudiness, and may take place during the industrial growth of algae. Hence, it is necessary to explore these multi-species systems to identify the possibility of improving results using them. To evaluate this concept, Mikaela's research analyzed and tested two algae strains by growing them independently and combined.

Role of INFINITY2-2 Microscopy Camera in Mikaela’s Project

The INFINITY2-2 microscopy camera (Figure 1) generated clear images (Figure 2) for Mikaela’s algae research. Lumenera's INFINITY CAPTURE and ANALYZE software packages facilitated Mikaela to configure the camera and take images of her samples easily. The combination of superior sensitivity and high-end color reproduction of the INFINITY2-2 camera helped Mikaela to achieve the best results possible.

The research is focused on predictive modeling of multi-species algal bio-reactors to gain insights for the development of more robust commercial systems under variable environmental conditions. A great number of cell counts will be involved in this project. Hence, the use of automated cell count software could minimize the manual effort required. Lumenera was pleased to support Mikeala’s project with an imaging and software package to simplify cell counting.
