Veeco Instruments has introduced a new, advanced Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) system called the NEXUS TAMR for sophisticated data storage applications.
The TAMR PVD system, combined with the company’s unique process, deposits an optical structure in the head, which in turn conducts the heat source utilized in the TAMR system. The company also announced that a hard disk drive manufacturing company has placed an order for the new TAMR PVD system.
The TAMR PVD system deposits low-loss films, which forms the laser optical waveguide. The films have heated deposition ability of the oxide films in metal and dielectric operation modes. These abilities facilitate high deposition rates as well as low optical loss aluminum oxide and tantalum pentoxide films.
Veeco’s Executive Vice President, Robert P. Oates, said that the TAMR is a next-generation technology and can increase the densities to about 50 times higher than what is available today. He informed that the company has teamed up with key customers to produce a new TAMR system and expects to receive more orders for their system from multiple clients.
