UL to Open State-Of-The-Art Photometric & Performance Testing Center in California

UL, a global safety science organization, announced plans for the July 2015 opening of a new 19,000-square-foot laboratory located in Brea, Calif. The state-of-the-art Photometric & Performance Testing Center will allow UL to provide more responsive and efficient service to regional customers in the western United States.

The lab will conduct testing of lighting products to various global energy-efficiency programs such as Illuminating Engineering Society LM-79, Energy Star®, DesignLights Consortium™, LED Lighting Facts®, Zhaga, California Energy Commission, and National Resources Canada.

The new UL laboratory in Brea will provide performance and quality assurance testing services for the entire supply chain in the lighting industry, including manufacturers, retailers, distributors, specifiers, and designers. The International Organization for Standardization/ International Electrotechnical Commission 17025-accredited lab will enhance UL's ability to deliver industry-leading turnaround times for verifying product performance. The lab will offer expanded photometric testing services with computer-controlled goniophotometers and integrating spheres to test luminaires and lamps.

"We are excited to bring localized performance testing services to a very important region within the lighting industry," said Todd Straka, business development director, Global Lighting. "The rapid pace of innovation for LED technology continues, and we understand how critical time-to-market is for our customers. Along with our safety laboratory, also located in Brea, UL will have the ability to provide more efficient, bundled safety and performance testing services to our customers, which will help them to more efficiently navigate the testing and certification process and ultimately get their products to market faster."

UL continues to invest in the expansion of performance testing capabilities, as quality and performance continues to remain a critical focus of LED technology and the lighting industry. The Brea lab will complement UL's other North American Lighting Performance Center of Excellence (COE) in Allentown, Pa., as well as UL's other global Lighting Performance COEs in China, Italy and India that each provide high-quality evaluations of LED product performance.

UL supports the global lighting industry with testing and certification services in more than 50 countries. Its safety science expertise, worldwide reach, and active involvement in the lighting industry helps those in the industry's supply chain make informed decisions, gain access to new markets and meet regulatory requirements.
