Lumerical Solutions Files Provisional Patent on Prototyping Optical Response

Lumerical Solutions reports the filing of a provisional patent application entitled ‘System and Method for Transforming a Coordinate System to Simulate an Anisotropic Medium.

’ Filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, this patent application represents the optical response of spatially varying, dispersive, anisotropic media and its simulation on a discretized grid, effective for finite-element method (FEM) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulators. This innovation will support a range of applications like spatial light modulators, liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, microdisplays, magneto-optical elements in optical communication and sensing systems, and integrated components based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) technology including LCOS optical switches.

Lumerical’s Chief Technology Officer and innovator, Dr. James Pond says that complex materials and nano-scale structure that exceed the capabilities of existing simulation tools have been integrated by advanced opto-electronic products. The improved framework of Lumerical enables designers to precisely simulate materials from silicon photonics to integrated quantum computing components, as well as liquid crystal displays to OLEDs.

The process developed by Lumerical for excellent simulation of anisotropic media will foster the technique through which designers can model the optical response of varied materials. Besides this disclosed invention, Lumerical has innovated material plugin capability, through which external parties can integrate complex material models within FDTD-based simulation projects.

Lumerical’s proprietary Multi-Coefficient Materials combine with the recent achievements to enable the designers to precisely model dispersive, spatially varying anisotropic media. Lumerical’s FDTD Solutions and MODE Solutions products combine with its subcell-accuracy Conformal Mesh Technology to create a versatile design environment for efficient and accurate simulation of advanced opto-electronic technologies.
