Leica Microsystems Gains Access to Olympus’ Digital Pathology Patents

Leica Microsystems and Olympus America have entered into a non-exclusive licensing agreement. As per the worldwide licensing deal, Leica will gain access to Olympus’ range of patents in the field of virtual microscopy and digital pathology.

The patents include equipment and methods for delivering, storing and creating virtual microscopy slides. The technology allows users to observe and share virtual microscopy images of high-resolution over the Internet.

The Group VP and General Manager of the Scientific Equipment Group at Olympus America, Osamu Joji believes that as the digital slide scanning market is on the rise, it is important to gain access to the patents held by Olympus. Access to these technologies will also help in bringing advancements to the field of pathology and in turn ensure better healthcare for patients across the globe.
