Osram Opto Semiconductors Develops High-Brightness LED Chip

Osram Opto Semiconductors’ research team has created an advanced LED chip called the UX:3 chip, which offers 50% more brightness than its earlier version. The chip has an enhanced lens that gives more distributed light, making it suitable for a number of applications such as vehicle headlights, pocket projectors and camera flashes of mobile phones including flat cell phones and smartphones.

The UX:3 chip-Oslux LED combination provides superior performance at higher currents than the earlier LED versions. It has ultra luminous efficiency that illuminates 90 cm diagonally at a distance of 1 m. This efficiency is good enough to capture high-quality images even under adverse light conditions.

In traditional LEDs, the metallic lattice is placed above the semiconductor layers and thus decreases the light. To improve the luminous efficiency, the Osram research team has altered the internal layout of the LED chip, which comprises two semiconductor layers and a metallic lattice. The research team positioned the lattice at the bottom to increase the wall plug efficiency phenomenon, which defines the affinity between the electrical current and the radiant flux of the chip.

The lattice transports the current to the upper layer, which in turn moves the electrons to the lower layer. This movement releases energy in the form of light.
