Osram Opto Semiconductors Develops New Infrared Light Emitting Diode

Osram Opto Semiconductors, a subsidiary of Siemens, has developed an infrared light-emitting diode (IR-LED) to identify microsleep symptoms in motorists.

The new fatigue identification system needs a camera with a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensor device that spots IR light at 850 nm and evaluates the driver’s image, which is secured by the camera.

The camera, mounted on the field of vision of the driver, utilizes image analysis software to decide whether the driver is distracted or fatigued. The SFH4236 LED is small in size and has an integrated lens that has a 40º illumination angle. It can be conveniently deployed in the vehicle’s dashboard, and it provides illumination to the driver directly from the front without generating shadows.

The IR-LED in motor vehicles is also useful for examining blind spots in drivers, short-range surroundings identification, night vision systems, and recognizing seat occupancy. The service life of the IR-LED is greater than the average time of a vehicle functioning in its service life.
