Optical Fiber Perimeter Intrusion Detection System from AFL

Provider of fiber-optic products, AFL has unveiled its new optical fiber perimeter intrusion detection system, called the Fiber Security.

The parent company of AFL, Fujikura has deployed the system over 40 times in Canada and Japan. The Fiber Security detects multiple intrusion events including lifting, climbing, or cutting a fence.

The Fiber Security uses a fence-mounted fiber-optic cable that is combined to a sensing unit. The sensing unit examines the pattern and magnitude of vibrations near the fence. The unique algorithm of the sensing unit distinguishes low and high level vibrations, and filters out vibrations that are unassociated with intrusions. The algorithm filters out environmental noise produced from rain, wind, planes, trains, or traffic, to minimize false positives. A maximum of 100 separate zones can be set up by utilizing the software, while the zones can have diverse sensitivity levels.

The detection accuracy of the Fiber Security is +/- 2% over the perimeter’s sensing length of up to 3.1 miles, while functioning at a maximum of 6.2 miles away from the sensing unit. A graphical interface shows the perimeter and the property with visual representation of the location where an intrusion is identified. The detection system can be connected with video systems and various technologies including passive IR sensors, through RS232 connections, dry contactors, or Ethernet. The device has the ability to send remote alerts through e-mail for premises that lack personnel on site.
