DiCon Fiberoptics Upgrades 50 GHz MEMS Optical Bandpass Filter

Provider of high-quality optical components, DiCon Fiberoptics has updated the 50 GHz micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) optical bandpass filter. The filter delivers high-performance similar to its previous models, but with deductions in both the footprint and height dimensions, and a 40% smaller package.

With faster tuning speed and multiple bandwidth choices, the MEMS optical bandpass filter is ideal for applications requiring wavelength tuning. The bandpass filter features an MEMS 1×N optical switch, and an MEMS variable optical attenuator. The filter demultiplexes the inward bound multi-wavelength signal and chooses the wavelength channel, by utilizing a tilting MEMS mirror.

The features of the optical bandpass filter include I2C and RS-232 control interfaces, Gaussian-shaped passband, repeatability, and thermal stability. The operating temperature of the filter ranges from -40°C to 85°C, while its optical power is lesser than 500 mW, and the tuning speed is lesser than 30 mW. The tuning resolution of the filter is 10 pm, polarization-dependent loss is less than 0.3 dB, and backreflection is greater than 40 dB.

The optical bandpass filter can be tuned within the L and C-bands, and it has the ability to be optimized for a 100 or 50 GHz channel plan. The channel parking and continuous scan capability allow the filter to be used in diverse optical filter applications, such as signal tracking and noise suppression. The filter’s small size and high-reliability is ideal for defense avionic and military systems. The filter can function as an optical spectrum analyzer for measurement and test applications, or as an optical channel monitor for DWDM systems.
