According to the Thomson Reuters 2009 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), the Optical Society’s (OSA) 14 flagship and peer-reviewed journals received the most citations and articles in the optics and photonics field. The journals published by OSA accounted for 35% of all articles published in the optics category of JCR, and received 40% of the citations in 2009.
OSA published nearly 7,000 peer-reviewed articles, while 132,377 citations were received in 2009. Eight of OSA journals including the Optics Express, and Journal of Optical Networking were listed in the top 24 journals, based on the impact criterion. Optics Express, an open access journal, with 3.278 impact factor, ranked third in the field.
The JCR has a unique EigenFactor score, which is calculated based on the number of times a journal articles, published in the last five years, has been cited in the JCR. OSA’s Applied Optics, Optics Letters and Optics Express constitute three of the top four journals ranked based on EigenFactor in the optics category.
Chief Executive Officer of OSA, Elizabeth Rogan, said the rankings confirm the superior standards set by the society’s journals. He further stated that OSA would be adding more titles with the launch of Optical Materials Express, and Biomedical Optics Express.
