OSA Helps Students to Present Papers at Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics

The OSA Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s 10 recipients of the Incubic/Milton Chang Travel Grants, endowed by Milton and Rosalind Chang, who will present their papers at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) to be held next week in San Jose, Calif.

The 10 students hail from six different countries and were selected from a record 105 applications. The grant is awarded annually to 20 top students in total, who present papers during CLEO or the Optical Society’s (OSA) Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO).

The following students were awarded grants to present their work at CLEO:

  • Martynas Beresna, University of Southampton, United Kingdom
  • Chieh-feng Chang, California Institute of Technology, USA
  • Paula Russell-Hill, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland
  • Alvaro Casas Bedoya, University of Sydney, Australia
  • Thomas Buss, Technical University of Denmark, Denmark
  • Pouya Maraghechi, University of Alberta, Canada
  • Martin Bernier, COPL, Université Laval, Canada
  • Doug French, Purdue University, USA
  • Josue Davila, University of Central Florida, USA
  • Shima Fardad, University of Central Florida, USA

“These students have much to contribute to the field of lasers and electro-optics,” said OSA CEO Elizabeth Rogan. “OSA and the OSA Foundation are honored to help provide them an opportunity to present their work at CLEO. I congratulate them on their accomplishments at this stage of their academic career.”

Applications for the grant are reviewed by the Awards Subcommittee of OSA’s Membership and Education Services Council. Students are judged on their paper submission, financial need and letters of recommendation. The winners each receive grants to cover travel-related expenses to attend and present at CLEO and FiO. The application deadline for the Incubic/Milton Chang Travel Grant for the 2010 FiO meeting is August 1.
