Intel Silicon Photonics Solutions Group Wins 2014 Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award

The Optical Society (OSA) is pleased to announce that the Intel® Silicon Photonics Solutions Group from Intel Corporation is the winner of the 2014 Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award.

The group is acclaimed for “12+ years of innovation in the research and development of a revolutionary 4x25G silicon photonics, fully integrated, optical transceiver that is designed to help change the way data centers are architected.” The project was started and is led by Mario Paniccia, Intel Fellow and general manager of the Silicon Photonics Solutions Group. The group will accept the award during the plenary session at OSA’s Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO), taking place Oct. 19-23, in Tucson, Arizona, USA.

“Contributions made by the Intel group to the field of optical engineering is truly remarkable,” said OSA President Philip Bucksbaum. “Intel is a world leader in advanced technology creation. Its Silicon Photonics Solutions Group continues to redefine how optical communications enables high-speed data transmission in today’s interconnected world. OSA is delighted to acknowledge their accomplishments with this award and congratulates the Intel team on their success.”

Intel Corporation created the Silicon Photonics Solutions Group in 2002 to bring silicon-based optical devices into production. Since its inception, the group has achieved a number of milestones, which includes creating the world’s first silicon-based optical data interconnect with integrated lasers and the foremost electrically-driven Hybrid Silicon Laser.

“We are humbled and honored to be recognized by OSA for such a prestigious award,” said Paniccia. “It is the result of many years of hard work from a talented team."

The Silicon Photonics Solutions Group team includes:

  • Andrew Alduino, optical architect
  • Assia Barkai, process engineer
  • Yoel Chetrit, process engineer
  • Rami Cohen, process engineer
  • Femi Dosunmu, component design engineer
  • John Heck, process engineer
  • Richard Jones, principal engineer and optical architect
  • Yimin Kang, component design engineer
  • Ling Liao, engineering manager
  • Ansheng Liu, principal engineer and optical architect
  • Hai-Feng Liu, system architect
  • David Nelson, principal engineer, integrated circuit design
  • Mario Paniccia, Intel Fellow and general manager
  • Haisheng Rong, manager of photonics lab
  • Kevin Sullivan, director of product development
  • Matt Sysak, product development lead

The Paul F. Forman Team Engineering Excellence Award was established by OSA in 1989 and has since been bestowed on dozens of outstanding researchers and engineers. Named in remembrance of Paul F. Forman, whose approach admirably exemplified team accomplishments, this team award recognizes technical achievements such as product engineering, process, software and patent development, as well as contributions to society such as engineering education, publication and management, and furthering public appreciation of optical engineering.
