First Solar, manufacturer of thin film solar panels, has completed the expansion of the largest photovoltaic project in Ontario, Canada.
The company, along with Enbridge, has extended the Ontario-based solar project to an 80 MW solar farm. Previously, the Sarnia project was a 20 MW plant. The opening ceremony was attended by Brad Duguid, Ontario Energy Minister.

Last year, Enbridge has purchased 100% of the facility from First Solar. According to Enbridge, the enhanced power facility saves approximately 39,000 tons of CO2 discharge every year, and generates sufficient energy for 12,800 houses. The expanded plant covers approximately 973,000 sqm and contains 1.3 million solar modules. These modules were produced by First Solar.
The Sarnia project is the only PV solar farm present in Enbridge’s portfolio. The company’s remaining 800 MW power is produced from fuel cells, wind and geothermal sources.
