The measurement principle employed is simple: A laser beam causes the coating
surface to heat slightly. The heat flows through the coating layer and is reflected
by the substrate (metal). The thicker the coating the longer it takes the heat
to be reflected by the substrate. The reflected heat is picked up by an infrared
detector and converted by an electronic module, the reflection time being a
measure of the coating thickness.
This patented technology for a substantial raw material savings potential,
particularly in large-scale coating facilities. Other advantages: minimization
of the reject rate, constant high quality, in addition to process automation
capability. Documentation for quality management purposes is facilitated as
well. The range of potential applications extends through virtually all industrial
sectors: from automotive industries to steel furnishings, electrical-control
cabinets, caravan sheet metals, heating radiators, kitchen appliances, metal
ceilings (top panels) and building facades.
